Live and Coexist

What is the "Live and Coexist" programme?

The University of Alcalá through its General Foundation and in collaboration with Obra Social (Social Work) of Caixa de Catalunya and the Town Hall of Alcalá de Henares, has developed the inter-generational programme for shared housing between elder people and university students “Live and Coexist”.

The Department of Culture of the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá is in charge of the coordination of the Programme. The students need to present their applications in the General Foundation for their processing. The City Department of Culture also does the monitoring of the participant students together with the Department of Social Services, who monitors the elders involved with the help of a team of psychologists from Caixa de Catalunya.

What are its aims?

  • To encourage and facilitate solidary meetings of mutual help between generations.
  • To experiment with alternative measures to face the loneliness issues of the elders.
  • To provide housing alternatives to students.

Who is it addressed to?

  • The programme is addressed to people 65 or older, who live alone and are able to cope on their own, and to university students 35 or younger, who do not regularly live in the same city and are not recipient of any salary.
  • To people older than 65 who wish to share their home with a student who will add vitality and a fresh perspective to their lives. The “Viure I Conviure” Foundation of Caixa de Catalunya helps these people with a monthly amount to cover the extra expenses that will derive from sharing a house (electricity, water, gas, etc.).

Both the students and the elders would commit through a contract where, besides the mutual respect, their rights and duties will be established.

Assistance to the programme

The Programme will grant financial assistance to both the selected student and the host elder.

Monitoring

From the beginning of the selection process to the end of the academic year, a team of professionals will help both the elder and the student to ensure an optimal coexistence. Monitoring visits to the home and personal meetings with the participants will be held periodically.
